What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury is brain impairment caused by a significant blow, jolt or penetration to the head, or another form of external force. Based on the severity of the injury, a traumatic brain injury may be classified as a mild traumatic brain injury, more commonly known as a concussion, or a severe traumatic brain injury, which can cause loss of speech. Traumatic brain injuries should not be confused with acquired brain injuries, which are damages to the brain caused by internal factors, such as strokes and seizures. A person may sustain a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident, automobile accident, fall, sports-related injury, domestic violence, gunshot wound, workplace injury, child abuse, military action, assault or other devastating causes.

What Are Common Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms?

While many traumatic brain injury symptoms are easy to detect, others are less apparent and may take some time to present themselves.

Common traumatic brain injury symptoms include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Memory or concentration problems
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness
